Profile
Richard Rivera focuses his practice in the areas of professional negligence, tort defense, white collar criminal defense and internal investigations. Mr. Rivera routinely represents hospitals, physicians, nurses, allied medical professionals and their insurers. In addition, Mr. Rivera represents both individual and corporate defendants in white collar criminal matters.
Prior to joining Parker Poe, Mr. Rivera served on active duty as a Captain in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps of the United States Army. Mr. Rivera gained extensive litigation experience during his prosecution of a wide variety of criminal cases as a Trial Counsel, Chief of Military Justice and Special Assistant to the United States Attorney in courts-martial and federal court. During his five years of active duty, he was stationed at Fort Wainwright, Alaska, and Fort Lee, Virginia.
Based on his civil practice and prior military practice, Mr. Rivera has significant experience in interacting with United States Attorneys Offices, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Department of Health and Human Services, and other federal investigative agencies.

Mr. Rivera routinely deals with a broad range of issues, including:
- Professional malpractice defense and risk management issues for hospitals, physicians, and other learned professionals
- Personal injury, wrongful death and property damage claims
- Internal investigations such as an investigation of health care fraud and abuse by major manufacturer of medical devices, investigation of fraud claims against international construction company, and investigation of violations of environmental criminal statutes by textile manufacturer
- White collar criminal defense
