Profile
Sydnor Thompson began his legal career as an associate in New York City, where he assisted John W. Davis in his representation of the State of South Carolina in the case of Briggs v. Elliot, which was reargued before the United States Supreme Court in 1953.
Judge Thompson joined Parker Poe in 1954, and was a partner in the Firm from 1956 until 1994. In 1994, he was appointed to the North Carolina Court of Appeals by Governor Hunt and served as a judge before returning to Parker Poe. Judge Thompson has been of counsel to the Firm since 1995.
During World War II, Judge Thompson was the recipient of the Bronze Star for his service in the United States Army. He spent one half of a year at Manchester University and one half of the year at the London School of Economics as a Fulbright Scholar. He also studied at St. Andrews University in Scotland in 1945. While at Harvard University, Judge Thompson was a member of the Harvard Law Review.
Judge Thompson has held several leadership positions with various Charlotte civic organizations and Harvard alumni groups. He was the founding chair of the Lawyer Referral Program in Mecklenburg County, sponsored by the Mecklenburg County Bar Association.
