The North Carolina Bar Association
April 30, 2009
The North Carolina Bar Association (NCBA) selected Mark Bernstein as the 2009 recipient of the H. Brent McKnight Renaissance Lawyer Award. The Award will be presented during the President’s Luncheon at the NCBA Annual Meeting on Friday, June 26, at the Grove Park Inn Resort & Spa in Asheville.
This is only the fourth time the NCBA had presented the Award. Proposed by the NCBA Professionalism Committee in 2006, the Award was adopted by the NCBA Board of Governors to recognize attorneys who demonstrate “Renaissance Lawyer” qualities, including intellectual achievement, excellent work and inspiring community service – the same qualities embodied by Judge McKnight, who died in 2004. Previous recipients include Peter Gilchrist (2006), E. Osborne Ayscue, Jr. (2007) and Wade Smith (2008).
Selected by the NCBA Board of Governors during its recent spring meeting at the N.C. Zoological Park in Asheboro, Mr. Bernstein became a partner at Parker Poe in 1968, and currently maintains retired-of counsel status.
