Kay Hobart Joins Parker Poe as Partner in Raleigh Office

(RALEIGH, N.C.) — Parker Poe Adams & Bernstein LLP announced that Kay Linn Miller Hobart has joined the firm as a partner in the Raleigh office. Prior to joining Parker Poe, Ms. Hobart served as Special Deputy Attorney General for the N.C. Department of Justice, Revenue Section.

Ms. Hobart brings more than 20 years of experience in state tax controversy matters and tax litigation at all levels of state and federal court. Throughout her career, she has litigated various high profile, complex multimillion-dollar cases before the North Carolina Business Court, Court of Appeals and Supreme Court, including the landmark decisions in A&F Trademark v. Tolson and Wal-Mart Stores East v. Hinton.

“Kay has an excellent reputation across our state and beyond,” Parker Poe Managing Partner Tom Griffin said in a statement. “We are honored to have her on board and know she will add a tremendous amount of depth to our State & Local Tax practice.”

Outside of the courtroom, Ms. Hobart has served on various commissions to reform the state’s tax system, including the Governor’s Commission to Modernize State Finances and former Governor Jim Hunt’s Institute for Emerging Issues Financing the Future task force. Since 2000, she has served as the North Carolina correspondent for State Tax Notes, and is a regular columnist to the leading tax news publication.

She is a frequent speaker at national seminars on taxation, including Georgetown University’s Law Center’s Advanced State and Local Tax Institute, and has received many honors including the Governor’s Award for Excellence and Outstanding State Government Service.

Ms. Hobart earned her BA with honors from Pennsylvania State University in 1984, her JD with honors from the University of North Carolina School of Law in 1989 and her LLM (Master of Laws) in Taxation from the University of Florida College of Law in 1990. In addition to practicing in North Carolina, she is admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of the United States.
