Kate Mayes is a tax attorney who focuses on joint ventures, mergers, and acquisitions. She has particular experience structuring deals in the real estate industry, including mixed-use, office, retail, multifamily, and self-storage properties. She has drafted and reviewed development, management, and purchase agreements, and she has advised on Section 1031 like-kind exchanges and partnership taxation.
In addition, she has helped entrepreneurs get their own businesses off the ground, assisting with structuring the entity and drafting operating agreements.
Kate is also experienced supporting clients in uncertain tax positions, preparing and analyzing financial statements and corporate income tax returns. She has worked with state and federal auditors on a variety of matters and helped clients resolve tax controversies.
Kate represents sports and entertainment clients as well, including advising professional athletes on contractual negotiations and tax implications.
Kate brings the perspective of in-house counsel to her work, having worked as tax counsel for Envision Healthcare Corporation in Colorado before joining Parker Poe. She received her master's in taxation law from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law and her law degree from Wake Forest University School of Law.
