Steven Wilson and Rick Glaser were highlighted in North Carolina Lawyers Weekly for their pro bono effort to protect a prison inmate from COVID-19.
Steven recently helped secure the conditional release of a 70-year-old man with underlying health conditions who had been convicted of a non-violent, tax-related offense. The man had been in a crowded prison environment where more than 20 residents tested positive for COVID-19.
"It’s a pretty bad situation to subject them and their families to this risk," Steven said. "The obvious thing to do is to release them. And those who can’t be released are safer if those who can be released are."
The conditional release results in supervision by community corrections officers and includes electronic monitoring, curfew, and drug testing. It is part of a new state policy called Extending the Limits of Confinement.
Rick, who supervised Steven's work and is a former federal prosecutor, said, "This is an outstanding way to try to resolve this and minimize health hazards in the prison system."
