Richard J. Rivera


Richard Rivera focuses his practice in the areas of professional negligence, tort defense and internal investigations. Mr. Rivera routinely represents hospitals, physicians, nurses, allied medical professionals and their insurers. He has litigation experience in both trial and appellate courts.

Prior to joining Parker Poe, Mr. Rivera served on active duty as a Captain and attorney in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps of the United States Army and was stationed at Fort Wainwright, Alaska, and Fort Lee, Virginia.  After serving five years in the United States Army, Mr. Rivera joined Parker Poe in 2003.

Representative Experience

Professional malpractice defense and risk management issues for hospitals, physicians, and other learned professionals.  Mr. Rivera has defended physicians, nurses, and/or hospitals at trial in cases involving anesthesia, obstetrics and gynecology, pulmonary embolism, pediatrics, and surgery.

  • Personal injury, wrongful death and property damage claims
  • Nursing home negligence claims
  • Representation of physicians, nurses and other professionals before various licensing boards
  • Insurance coverage disputes
  • Internal investigations such as an investigation of health care fraud and abuse by major manufacturer of medical devices, investigation of fraud claims against international construction company, and investigation of violations of environmental statutes by a textile manufacturer.
