Pro Bono Work is About More Than Just Helping Out in the Community
Pro Bono work at Parker Poe is about more than just helping out in the community and doing the right thing – it’s also about getting results. The success stories from the firm’s pro bono work range from individual projects to statewide programs that protect the interests of North Carolina’s most vulnerable citizens and those in great need of legal representation.
During 2012, Parker Poe attorneys collectively handled one-fourth of the North Carolina Guardian Ad Litem program’s appellate cases. It doesn’t matter if it is a multi-million dollar economic development project or preparing the appeal for a child abuse victim, Parker Poe attorneys embrace the challenge and provide outstanding legal representation.
Protecting At-Risk Children
The mandate of the North Carolina Guardian Ad Litem Pro Bono Program is to keep children safe. The state put together a collaborative business model that brings together some of the brightest and best lawyers from the private sector and office staff that manage the program. The program currently serves more than 15,000 at-risk children.
Pro bono attorneys throughout the state helped with 82 out of 156 cases involving child abuse and neglect at the appellate level. Parker Poe ramped up its efforts and has since committed to taking new cases each month to support the program.
Collaborative Achievement
The firm’s pro bono success stories are not limited to advocacy for children. The North Carolina Bar Association Large Law Firm Pro Bono Service Award and Mecklenburg County Bar’s Outstanding Collaborative Project Pro Bono Award went to Parker Poe in 2014. This time, Parker Poe lawyers teamed with Duke Energy and assisted more than 50 clients with criminal expunctions.
The standards for the Outstanding Collaborative Project Pro Bono Award line up with Parker Poe’s commitment to provide excellent value and service for all clients. The award goes to “…members who have contributed an extraordinary amount of pro bono services, provided a great impact for justice, developed innovative or enduring projects and/or demonstrated a dramatic improvement in its pro bono services.”
Parker Poe’s pro bono work is the right thing to do…and it does make a difference in the places we call home.
