(CHARLOTTE, January 19, 2005) – Former federal prosecutor Richard (“Rick”) S. Glaser has joined Parker Poe Adams & Bernstein LLP, where he will help build the firm’s new practice in white collar criminal defense and internal investigations. As the former First Assistant and Executive Assistant United States Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina, Mr. Glaser was responsible for oversight and operational review of Civil, Administrative and Criminal Divisions of the District. Mr. Glaser is a Partner in Parker Poe’s litigation department.

Drawing on Mr. Glaser’s background in white collar criminal cases, Parker Poe plans to expand its business litigation services in response to today’s needs of businesses and individuals, where the actions of corporations and their executives have come under intense scrutiny. He will also offer clients preventative counseling, helping them to develop compliance strategies as well as assisting them with internal investigations of possible employee wrongdoing.

“We are pleased that Rick will be joining us and think he will be a substantial addition to Parker Poe’s litigation practice,” said William L. Rikard, Jr., Partner and Chair of Parker Poe’s Litigation Department. “We believe that our clients will benefit from Rick’s extensive experience with the Department of Justice.”

With more than 20 years of experience in grand jury investigations, Mr. Glaser’s experience includes major healthcare fraud, insurance fraud, public corruption, bankruptcy fraud and Securities and Exchange Commission-related cases. He has tried more than 90 criminal jury trials in federal court and has handled health care qui tam (whistle blower) cases in federal court. In addition, as a Lead Evaluator and former Director of the Department of Justice (“DOJ”)’s Evaluation and Review Staff, the DOJ’s self-evaluating body, Mr. Glaser gained a deep understanding of how the US Attorney Offices work throughout the nation and the challenges that businesspeople may face when encountering a federal lawsuit.

In addition to successful prosecution of numerous white collar cases, including major health care fraud , he has obtained major verdicts in the following cases over the years:

  • U.S. v. Caldwell – Key-man insurance fraud involving a double homicide
  • U.S. v. Musgrove – Bankruptcy fraud of more than six million dollars
  • U.S. v. Lanier – Securities and Exchange Commission-related insider trading
  • U.S. v. Wade - The seminal case regarding a prosecutor's sole right to file a substantial assistance motion in a federal case which was handled by Mr. Glaser at both the District and Circuit court levels and affirmed by the U.S. Supreme Court in a published opinion.

Mr. Glaser received his J.D. from the West Virginia College of Law in 1980 and his B.A. from Duke University in 1976. He also attended the Public Policies Graduate School at Duke University from 1976 to 1977.
