(RALEIGH, N.C.)—The 17th Annual John B. Ross, Jr. Leadership Award was presented to Charles C. Meeker, a Partner in the Raleigh office of Parker Poe, during the Greater Raleigh Convention and Visitors Bureau’s (GRCVB) Annual Meeting on August 30. The award recognizes an outstanding executive management-level individual in the Wake County hospitality industry who displays exceptional leadership skills.
Given in honor of John B. Ross, Jr., the previous Board Chairman of the GRCVB, the award exemplifies the courage, leadership, dedication and inspiration that Mr. Ross portrayed in the hospitality industry for more than 20 years.
Mr. Meeker was elected to his fifth two-year term as Mayor of Raleigh in 2009. He was first sworn in as the City’s Mayor on December 3, 2001. Mr. Meeker did not seek what would have been a record-breaking sixth term and left the office of Mayor on December 5, 2011. He previously served as a member of the Raleigh City Council for eight years from 1985-1989 and 1991-1995.
The GRCVB's Annual Meeting was held at the Raleigh Convention Center, the building of which was proposed by Mr. Meeker himself during the initial days of his first term as Mayor. Mr. Meeker championed the project throughout to its opening on September 5, 2008.
