(RALEIGH, N.C.)–The Raleigh office of Parker Poe Adams & Bernstein LLP will hold 'Life in a Law Firm' on February 23, an educational program for minority law students to learn first-hand about the journey from law school to practicing law. This year will mark the seventh year Parker Poe has hosted this initiative and the sixth year in the Raleigh office.

“Our goal is to expose the students to different pathways in the legal profession and provide perspective on what it’s like to practice law on a day-to-day basis,” said Sidney Evering, Parker Poe’s Director of Diversity. “We've received overwhelmingly positive feedback from students who have participated in the past and we really look forward to hosting the program again this year.”

Parker Poe’s Diversity Committee created this program in 2007 as a unique way to provide resources and guidance to students who will soon be entering the legal profession. During the five-hour program, students will interact with attorneys from various practice areas including business law, employment, government, health care, litigation, public finance and real estate.

Sessions will be facilitated around the following topics:

  • Different Pathways to Practice
  • The Distinctions Between a Litigation Practice and a Transactional Practice
  • Professionalism and Networking Skills
  • Tips for Finding and Keeping a Job in a Tough Economy

In addition to the sessions, students will practice interviewing skills and gain one-on-one feedback from attorneys in mock interviews.

Participating students represent six law schools in North Carolina – Campbell Law School, the Charlotte School of Law, Duke University School of Law, University of North Carolina School Law, North Carolina Central University School of Law and Wake Forest University School of Law. Approximately 60 students are expected to attend this year’s program in Raleigh.

South Carolina law students participated in the program earlier this month in Parker Poe’s Columbia office.
