(RALEIGH, NC) — Catharine Biggs Arrowood, Partner at Parker Poe Adams & Bernstein LLP, was sworn in as the 120th president of the North Carolina Bar Association (NCBA) on June 21, 2014 at the Wilmington Convention Center in Wilmington, NC, at the organization’s annual Gala Banquet. Arrowood is the fifth female president since the association’s inception in 1899.
She succeeds Alan Duncan of Greensboro and was formally inducted during the association’s 2014 Annual Meeting, June 19-22. In this position, Arrowood will preside over all meetings of the NCBA Board of Governors and the NCBA Foundation Board of Directors.
Prior to her 37 years at Parker Poe, Arrowood served as an associate attorney general for the North Carolina Department of Justice. Her practice areas include commercial litigation and arbitration, including antitrust and business torts, intellectual property litigation, alternative dispute resolution, and class action defense.
Among her many honors, she was named "Lawyer of the Year" in Antitrust Law for 2013 by Best Lawyers and has been named among the "Top 100 Lawyers" and "Top 50 Female Lawyers" by North Carolina Super Lawyers for the past four years. In addition to her many civic and charitable activities, Arrowood previously served for four years on the NCBA Board of Governors and as chair of the Women in the Profession Committee from 2004 to 2006. She was recognized by the NCBA in 2011 as the recipient of the H. Brent McKnight Renaissance Lawyer Award.
“We are honored to have Catharine Arrowood serve as our 2014/2015 president,” said Allan Head, executive director of the NCBA. “Her leadership in the business and legal community make her well prepared to lead NCBA.”
"Catharine’s depth of experience and breadth of leadership expertise will serve her well as she leads our professional association,” said Kevin Chignell, Managing Partner of Parker Poe’s Raleigh office. “On behalf of everyone at our firm, we are proud to have her as a colleague and as president of the NCBA.”
