The Honorable Sydnor Thompson died Tuesday, Jan. 27, after a long battle with cancer.
Judge Thompson joined the firm in 1954 when it was known as Taliaferro, Grier, Parker & Poe, and was a partner in the firm from 1956 until 1994. In 1994, he was appointed to the North Carolina Court of Appeals by Governor Jim Hunt and served as a judge before returning to Parker Poe. Judge Thompson had been of counsel to the firm since 1995.
During World War II, Judge Thompson was the recipient of the Bronze Star for his service in the United States Army. He spent six months at Manchester University and six months at the London School of Economics as a Fulbright Scholar. He also studied at St. Andrews University in Scotland in 1945. While at Harvard University, Judge Thompson was a member of the Harvard Law Review.
Over the past six decades, Judge Thompson also held several leadership positions with various Charlotte civic organizations and Harvard alumni groups.
“He was a pillar of the community and of our firm, and we will miss him greatly,” Parker Poe Managing Partner Tom Griffin said.
