Raleigh, N.C. – Parker Poe Adams & Bernstein LLP is pleased to announce that Raleigh partner Catharine Arrowood provided remarks at the swearing in of North Carolina Chief Justice Cheri Beasley on Thursday. Chief Justice Beasley is the 29th chief justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court and the first African-American woman to hold that position.

Catharine’s remarks touched on the role of the chief justice as the head of the third branch of government and as the leader of the legal profession. Catharine was among a small group who delivered remarks that included Walter Holton (a descendant of Tabitha Holton, the first woman admitted to the N.C. Bar), Justice Paul Newby, and Governor Roy Cooper. More than 1,000 guests attended the ceremony.

Catharine has been recognized as a “Friend of the Court” by former Chief Justice Mark Martin due to her service to the state judicial branch, including as co-chair of the N.C. Commission on the Administration of Law and Justice (NCCALJ).The NCCALJ spent more than a year conducting a comprehensive review of North Carolina’s court system – the first such review in two decades. She has also served as president of the North Carolina Bar Association and the Wake County Bar Association.

At Parker Poe, Catharine has successfully litigated and arbitrated for large and small businesses for decades. Her clients have included educational institutions, utilities, insurance companies, accounting and law firms, health care and biotech firms, banks, and commercial aerospace companies.
