Steve Carey and Corri Hopkins presented virtually to the North Carolina Bar Association's Antitrust & Complex Business Disputes Law Section. They discussed the likely impact and importance of the General Assembly’s decision to give a direct and immediate right of appeal to the North Carolina Supreme Court of any trial court decision regarding class certification. That jurisdictional change in 2017 was a significant departure from earlier procedures involving class action litigation in North Carolina, as well as from the procedures used by federal courts and the majority of states.

Steve and Corri highlighted the difference between the new procedures and the former procedures in North Carolina and the procedures in other jurisdictions, including federal courts. They also identified some open issues that the Supreme Court may need to address.
