Bruce Thompson was quoted in BBC News, Reuters, and The Associated Press about President Joe Biden dropping out as the nominee for the Democratic Party in the upcoming U.S. presidential election and Biden’s endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris.
Bruce was an early advisor to Harris' campaign when she ran for president in 2020. As a Democrat who sits on the party’s Rules Committee today, Bruce told Reuters that he’s been actively calling delegates and finding broad support for Harris.
Bruce was asked on BBC News what the process is for Harris to be confirmed as the nominee and what it will take to run a successful campaign before the November election.
"The key is making sure that the delegates who are pledged to Joe Biden continue to support her as the nominee," Bruce said. "(Sunday) night, the North Carolina delegation to the Democratic National Convention (DNC) met and 100% of the delegates pledged to support Vice President Harris. The Tennessee delegation did the same thing. You’re going to see a lot of states following up with that and, as we head into the convention, I think she’s going to lock down pretty close to 100% of the delegates to support her."
"If you look back to 2020, even though Kamala Harris had a very successful electoral record as a district attorney and attorney general and even a U.S. senator from our largest state, moving that operation to a presidential election across all 50 states is a difficult leap," Bruce told BBC News. "You see that happen with a lot of candidates the first time that they run for president. Here, she’s going to inherit a pretty strong campaign apparatus that has already had close to $100 million on hand and raised another $50 million (Sunday) night. It’s a much different story."
Bruce spoke about what a Democratic convention helmed by Harris would mean for the party with the AP.
"I think it’ll be a celebratory mood," Bruce said. "There’s been way too much gallows humor in the Democratic Party over the last month. And now we have this confidence and this energy."
