Lexi Trumble was again quoted in CBS Sports about the historic NCAA settlement that formalizes schools compensating student-athletes. The settlement is still awaiting final approval in court.
"The agreement, as drafted, answers a bunch of burning questions," Lexi told CBS Sports' Dennis Dodd. "I give the parties credit for arriving at those answers. But it’s not a perfect document, and I think we do have a long way to go before we have any degree of comfort before questions are answered."
Lexi also provided insight into obstacles to implementation of the agreement, including the application of Title IX. While Title IX is not specifically addressed in the historic NCAA settlement, Lexi predicts the civil rights law will play a role in the disbursement of revenue-sharing funds.
The Department of Education has weighed in on Title IX’s applicability to the settlement’s proposed NIL structure, Lexi said, "but (has) offered no practical guidance."
"We have a settlement agreement that has been (agreed upon) under one administration, and depending on the results of the election, (implementation) could look entirely different," Lexi said. Political administrations' interpretations of Title IX vary, and the Department of Education’s enforcement approach may be impacted by the results of November’s presidential election.
Lexi also commented on the settlement agreement’s practical impacts on athletics departments' recruiting efforts, with scouting activities and verbal commitments for the 2025-2026 academic year already well-underway.
