Raleigh, NC – Parker Poe Adams & Bernstein LLP is pleased to announce that Catharine Biggs Arrowood is this year’s recipient of TerraLex’s Hal J. Pos Award, the highest honor given by the network. Catharine is the second person to receive the award, which recognizes a TerraLex member whose leadership, character, and dedication exemplify the values lived by the late Hal J. Pos: respect, honor, and integrity.
"It has been my honor to be a part of the TerraLex network of over 23,000 attorneys and to support its commitment to global legal collaboration and creative problem solving," Catharine said.
Catharine, retired of counsel in the firm’s Raleigh office, is a past member of the TerraLex board of directors as well as a former co-chair of the International Dispute Resolution Group. TerraLex described her impact on the network and the legal community as "profound."
"Catharine’s influence on TerraLex is long-lasting and deeply felt," said Derek Humphery-Smith, TerraLex’s global chair. "She embodies the ideals Hal J. Pos stood for — an unwavering sense of fairness, a dedication to professional excellence, and a commitment to building genuine relationships across borders. This award is a celebration of her legacy and our deep appreciation for her leadership."
Catharine has more than 50 years of legal experience. She litigated and arbitrated for both large and small businesses and has considerable experience with regulated companies. She focused on resolving problems that threaten the viability of a business. Her clients have included educational institutions, utilities, insurance companies, accounting and law firms, health care and biotech firms, banks, and commercial aerospace companies.
Her career has been recognized by the legal community, including her selection into the inaugural class of the North Carolina Lawyers Hall of Fame, sponsored by North Carolina Lawyers Weekly. Catharine has been recognized by Chambers: USA as a Band 1 practitioner in Litigation: General Commercial, the first woman to achieve this ranking in North Carolina. Catharine has also won The Advocate’s Award from the Litigation Section of the North Carolina Bar Association, which recognizes "members of the Litigation Section who are the 'superstars' of our profession."
Catharine was the inaugural recipient of Parker Poe’s Women’s Achievement Award, which has been named after her since and recognizes the achievements of women in the legal profession each year.
Catharine’s contributions to her community are also numerous. She has served on various boards of directors, including the North Carolina Symphony Society, DirectWomen, UNC/Rex Healthcare, and the North Carolina Community Foundation, and is active in board training.
