Scott Scheele was quoted in MLex about the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and Federal Communications Commission (FCC) review of Charter Communications' proposed $34.5 billion acquisition of Cox Communications.
"Broadband is the thing they will focus most of their energy on," Scott said. "It's like most other antitrust analyses. Is there overlap? What kind of concentration is there down to a neighborhood level. And are there substitutes consumers can turn to?"
Scott also spoke about how the government will test the speed and capacity of wires broadband and satellite compared to hardlines that run into a neighborhood or home like cable and fiber.
"The DOJ will have to ask how constraining it is at 5 p.m. on a weeknight when wireless networks are burdened," Scott said. "Is T-Mobile or a similar broadband product going to provide consumers the speed and access they want at a competitive price? The DOJ will have to think about that."
