Charlotte, N.C. – Parker Poe Adams & Bernstein LLP is pleased to announce the election of two new partners for 2019. Fern Paterson in Charlotte and Tyler Smith in Greenville were voted into the firm’s partnership.

Fern Paterson focuses her practice on environmental, administrative, and regulatory law. Fern’s practice includes litigation, regulatory compliance matters, and business transactions for a wide variety of clients, including in the energy, manufacturing, and real estate industries. Fern is licensed in North Carolina and South Carolina, and Fern is also a licensed professional engineer in North Carolina.

Prior to joining Parker Poe, Fern was a private environmental consultant focusing on technical air issues and, later, an engineer for the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality. Fern was appointed by the Mecklenburg County Board of County Commissioners to serve on the Air Quality Commission (AQC) and has served as a commissioner since 2013.

Tyler Smith's practice focuses on both public and business finance as well as government and public policy. He has worked with public and private sector clients across the U.S., such as hospitals, financial institutions, educational institutions of all levels, and 501(c)(3) organizations.

Tyler has substantial experience with new markets tax credits, interest rate swaps, derivative transactions, and other complex investment products and is an integral part of the Parker Poe team for the new, federal Qualified Opportunity Zone (QOZ) program. His undergraduate and graduate level education in mathematics, economics, and law, together with extensive transactional experience, make him well-positioned to understand complex economic transactions and to advise clients on a breadth of potential transaction structures, options, risks, and solutions.
