Raleigh, NC – The National Bar Association selected Nana Asante-Smith for its Top 40 Under 40: Nation’s Best Advocate Award, which recognizes outstanding attorneys from across the country.
Nana and the other winners were selected for exemplifying a broad range of high achievement in the legal field, including in advocacy, innovation, vision, leadership, and legal and community involvement. Attorneys and legal professionals were specifically selected for their advocacy to advance the causes of justice, equality, professionalism, and community service. Winners included attorneys from small, medium, and large firms, judges, in-house counsel, and elected officials.
Nana focuses her practice on internal and governmental investigations, white collar and business litigation, and cases involving allegations of sex discrimination at colleges and universities. She has represented clients in industries such as financial services, healthcare, manufacturing, and education. She works with clients to uncover the root of their challenges, identify practical solutions, and capitalize on opportunities. Nana draws on her experience as a Wake County Assistant District Attorney, where she prosecuted a wide variety of cases.
Nana is deeply committed to serving both her community and the legal profession. She currently serves on the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority Board, where she chairs the Operations Committee. Additionally, she is a subcommittee advisory member of the North Carolina State Bar’s Grievance Committee and serves on the advisory board for the Durham YMCA. Her previous roles include chairing the Durham Mayor’s Council for Women, leading organizations representing Black attorneys in North Carolina and Durham, and serving on the board of directors for Duke University’s alumni network in the Triangle area.
The National Bar Association is the nation’s oldest and largest network of Black legal professionals. Nana and the other award winners will be honored during the association's annual convention in Nashville in July.
