Tiffany Rowe was quoted in International Trade Today about how some importers over the past month have been receiving fraudulent letters in the mail regarding their International Emergency Economic Power Act (IEEPA) refunds.
Some of these fraudulent communications are similar to identify theft operations, meaning the scammers are phishing for information, Tiffany told the publication. Some also have emblems resembling the U.S. Customs and Border Protection seal.
"The thing that makes these ones the most worrisome is that some of them have refund or reimbursement claim amounts that are rather accurate," Tiffany said, adding that the refund numbers in the letters aren’t exact.
Importers should assess their cybersecurity systems to ensure there’s been no system infiltration, Tiffany added.
"Just know that CBP isn’t really going out there and offering a hand in the reimbursement claim process," Tiffany said.
