(CHARLOTTE, N.C.)—Parker Poe Adams & Bernstein LLP announced today that DeWitt F. “Mac” McCarley will join the Firm’s Government & Public Policy practice group as a Partner following his retirement from the City of Charlotte. Mr. McCarley is the current City Attorney of Charlotte, a role he has held for 17 years.
“We are fortunate to have Mac on board,” said Bill Farthing, Managing Partner of Parker Poe. “We look forward to having his tremendous knowledge of governmental affairs and his unique problem-solving skills available to our clients. Plus, Mac brings to the table an abundance of business and community relationships that he has formed through his government connections and experience.”
As City Attorney, Mr. McCarley works with the Mayor and City Council as their chief legal advisor. He also advises the City Manager and staff on legal issues affecting the City. During his tenure, Mr. McCarley led negotiations on the contracts for the NASCAR Hall of Fame, the Charlotte Bobcats and the 2012 Democratic National Convention. Additionally, Mr. McCarley is credited with growing the in-house capabilities of the City’s legal department, which has become a model for the state.
“I’m very excited about being paired with one of the best municipal lawyers in the country and a true friend,” said Anthony Fox, a partner in Parker Poe’s Government & Public Policy group. “Mac will certainly raise the bar of Parker Poe’s municipal law practice and better equip our firm to address the regulatory needs of both our public sector and private sector clients.”
Mr. McCarley began his career in 1977 as Assistant General Counsel with the North Carolina League of Municipalities, a nonpartisan federation of more than 540 cities, towns and villages in North Carolina. He served in that role until 1981 when he became the City Attorney for the City of Greenville, NC, a position he held for more than 13 years before moving to the City of Charlotte.
Mr. McCarley was the 2011 recipient of the Charles S. Rhyne Lifetime Achievement in Municipal Law Award. This award, which is presented by the International Municipal Lawyers Association (IMLA), is the highest honor bestowed upon a lawyer by his peers. It honors the recipient’s lifetime achievements in the field of municipal law. He is also a past recipient of the Ernie Ball Award given by the North Carolina Association of Municipal Attorneys in recognition of Mr. McCarley’s many contributions in the area of municipal law.
As an avid community servant and successful fundraiser, Mr. McCarley has raised substantial amounts of money both locally and statewide for non-profit organizations, including the Mecklenburg Bar Foundation, the United Way of Central Carolinas and the School of Government at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
